five years later, it continues half a decade after hurricane katrina. and why there's a lot to do still. hello, i'm don scott. >> and i'm jessica kartalija. here's what people are talking about this weekend. we all remember the devastation in new orleans five years ago after the levees failed. now, years later, people will working hard to rebuild the city. here's more from new orleans. >> reporter: her concrete porch is all that's left of her six bedroom home. >> i'm looking for these. >> reporter: she unpacked her new home a few blocks from the one flooded.

i'm just amazed. >> the ice cream truck still drives through the empty lots and the residents are looking forward to seeing more neighbors flagging it down. >> and as we remember between, we look ahead to this hurricane season, it's in full swing. the first warning doppler weather radar continues with marty bass tracking a pair of storms. >> we need to go to the tropics, hurricane danielle, since we spoke yesterday, danielle went from a cat 2 to a cat 4 overnight. now, do understand the track hasn't changed. danielle is squarely going to the middle of the atlantic, unlike yesterday, we do have to flow a flag out because of ocean swells effecting every beach resort from the carolinas into new england.

it's like throwing a brick in a pond and watching the ripple move shore. this is going to be a factor into the weekend and next week. we'll have a lot of traffic on the shores with the great weather. now, we go south east of danielle. that's tropical storm earl. earl is in deed going to strengthen. by the time of earl's you know, potential last stop on this one graphic, we'll put it out to wednesday. earl could be a darn well powerful hurricane. it could cause problems up to new england. the story hasn't been set on earl. now, add to that another deep area of low pressure. the sat heights are showing -- the satellites are showing this off of the desert in west africa. the tropics are active. we know the track of one, the track of two, and three are unseen.

bash and now, his condition is deteriorating. >> i feel fine right now. >> reporter: this 10-year-old survived surgery after a life threatening attack by this sting ray. his stomach was punctured. his family didn't think he would make it. >> it was incredibly terrifying to say the least. >> i screamed, get it out of me. >> reporter: thursday night, they said he's taken a turn for the worst. steve irwin died from this in 2006, he survived and surgery and now, he's in johns hopkins awaiting another procedure, it's unleer what's happened since the last interview. >> it flew and hit me in my stomach and pierced my liver. >> reporter: the doctors are struggling to find out what to do next.

to an arrest and conviction. the economy grew at a slower pace this spring than estimated. that's the word from analysts who say it's due to the largest surge in imports in 26 years and there's a slow down on restocking and supplies. investors were expecting worse now -- news and because of that, the stocks are actually up this noon. the s&p and the nasdaq are also posting gains at this hour. meanwhile, the iowa egg farmer was barred from selling eggs here in maryland in the 90s,the maryland officials tried to shutdown this man's chestertown farm after he was charged with selling contaminated eggs. he sued the state and left to go and farm eggs in iowa.

three u.s. soldiers in afghanistan were killed by home made bombs. 55 troops have been killed this month including 35 americans. there are new video of dozens of trapped miners in chile. they smile for the camera and as charlie d'agata reports for wjz, that rescue may not come until christmas. >> reporter: the eerie images show 33 men stripped to the waist, they've lost weight and they're healthy after being trapped underground for three weeks. and the miners are keeping their hopes up. they're singing national anthems and sending video messages to their families and rescue workers. he says, it takes courage to not leave us abandon. we know everything you've been doing and the relatives were thrilled to see their loved
